The Hügelkultur Method is used with raised garden beds and has proven to be highly effective. First the raised beds are constructed, then they are filled two-thirds of the way using various biomass, cardboard, logs, and small branches.  Lastly the remaining third is filled with soil and compost and hay or mulch is added to the top. This hay or much topper is an important step as it assists in protecting plants, deterring weeds and ensuring moisture.

All food and yard waste at the center are collected and used to create compost.

In the Summer of 2023, residents and friends assisted in the construction of our composting bays. This greatly reduces our center’s overall waste and furthers our efficiency in creating nutrient dense soil mediums.

Companion planting  has also proven to be an excellent way to deter pests from plant predation. Recently, Marigolds, Nasturtiums, Holy Basil, Green Onions, Sweet Vidalia Onions and Red onions were planted as our premier companion plants.
